From the very beginning, my experience at 108 Yoga was warm and welcoming. The space is calm and relaxing and the members are all skill levels, ages and body types. I always feel comfortable and supported by the instructors as well as the other members in each class. There are lots of options for different kinds of classes running throughout the week at different times during the day. I love that I never feel rushed or pressured to go beyond my own personal challenges (or to compare myself to other members). The instructors at 108 encourage everyone to listen to their own bodies and go at their own pace... I really appreciate that because some days just feel rougher than others! The important thing, for me anyway, is to consistently show up and do my best, whatever that might look like!
Inkwell Modern Handmade Boutique & Letterpress Studio
I'm kicking off a new monthly blog series featuring local businesses I love and support! These businesses are members of I Love Local HFX, a group of independent businesses that are committed to supporting and strengthening our community here in Halifax. These local business owners offer products and services that make our city a vibrant place to shop, eat and live. One of my favorite shops in downtown Halifax is Inkwell Boutique! This shop is full of everything a creative soul will appreciate: beautiful handmade paper goods, custom printed textiles, design and lifestyle magazines and unique gifts. Most of these items are made locally! It's the perfect place to pick up a special card (just in time for Valentine's Day!) or a quirky gift to surprise a friend.
Red Balloon: It's Kind of Like a Carnival!
As a photographer who loves vibrant colour, big smiles and lots of laughter, this photo shoot with Colette and Laura of Red Balloon is easily one of my favorites. The concept they brought to me to launch their brand new website was the carnival. Yes please, sign me up! These images are full of energy, whimsy and joy... everything you can expect from an experience with Red Balloon!
Angela Hix | Halifax Headshots
Having a professional makeup artist on site when I photograph headshots makes such a big difference in the quality of my final images. Angela Hix is one of favorite local makeup artists. I personally prefer to keep makeup clean and simple to highlight the best features of each client. I do the same with posing and lighting to capture each individual in a way that best suits their unique personalities. Plus, it just feels great to get dolled up for a photoshoot! Angela and I teamed up for some profile photographs last week and I love the results!
Halifax Pop Explosion | Halifax Headshots
Yesterday I met up with the HPXers to shoot headshots before the Halifax Pop Explosion festival and digital conference next week. This crew is working super hard to bring a fantastic festival to our city, be sure to check it out! I'll be photographing the digital conference, come say hello if you are there too! Looking forward to it!
City Harvest – I Love Local HFX | Halifax Event Photography
Yesterday was a busy day in Halifax! We had the perfect sunny fall day to explore the city on foot and visit many of I Love Local HFX's City Harvest participants. I teamed up with the Halifax Food Bloggers to take advantage of all the amazing back-door take-outs offered in celebration of City Harvest. The food was amazing!
Two Gold Rings | Susanne and Doug
I absolutely love doing engagement photography sessions with my couples before their big wedding day. It gives us a chance to hang out, get to know each other and have some fun taking photos! Sue and Doug had some great suggestions for our Halifax waterfront engagement session and I was excited to collaborate with them on creative ideas. I feel really lucky to be working with two local artists; Sue is an amazing dancer and choreographer and Doug is a talented percussionist and musician.
I Love Local HFX | Halifax Portrait Photography
One of my favorite projects this year: the I Love Local HFX brochure highlighting Halifax's best independent shops and restaurants. I Love Local HFX is a group of community-minded businesses that are committed to supporting each other and making Halifax a vibrant place to shop, eat and live. I'm thrilled to have been a part of the creative team bringing this new brochure together.
The Creative Side of Food Photography | Kelly Neil – Food Photographer
Lately I have been focusing more on bringing together two of my passions... photography and food. I have been following local food bloggers here in Halifax and one of my favorites is Kelly Neil. Her photographs of food have inspired me to be more involved in local food culture and I was thrilled that she was willing to give me a behind-the-scenes peek of the preparation and styling that goes into food photography.
Gateaux Rose – Artfully Designed Custom Baked Sweets
Mmmmm, I love cake! I've had my eye on Crystal Ross' artistic creations for a while and decided to connect with her for a photo shoot featuring her business Gateaux Rose. Crystal, a NSCAD grad and artist who works at Argyle Fine Art, spends many evenings and weekends creating artfully designed, custom baked sweets. I really like Crystal's philosophy about these edible works of art. They don't have to be perfect and they don't have to last forever – they are meant to be enjoyed in the moment and shared with the people you love. What a wonderful way to celebrate life's important events!
